This is an exciting opportunity to join the Molecular & Cellular Sciences (MCS) team within Biomarker Development (BMD) and Translational Medicine (TM) at the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR). BMD focuses on delivering fit for purpose integrated biomarkers leveraging diverse expertise and knowledge in immunology, genomics, protein and cellular biology and state of the art data sciences.
Our innovative spirit enables the development and application of cutting-edge technologies which address key clinical questions to define disease stage or progression, predict the safety or efficacy of medication, select a group of patients who would benefit most from a given therapy, and identify additional clinical indications suitable for a drug.
As a Principal Scientist within MCS in BMD, you will work in close collaboration with project and clinical teams to define and implement clinical biomarker strategies. As a biomarker clinical study lead, you will provide scientific insights and contributions to the overall clinical study biomarker plan, develop novel exploratory cellular assays, implement internal and external biomarker activities and interpret results to enable proof of mechanism, proof of biology, safety and efficacy understanding. You will be be accountable for the execution of the biomarker plan and the successful implementation of internal and external biomarker activities, delivering high quality data and playing a pivotal role in early phase human clinical trials.

Your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:
• Support biomarker strategies in collaboration with Biomarker Experts, Therapeutic Area Heads and other experts in NIBR
• Support clinical studies as biomarker study lead; be accountable for the execution of the biomarker plan and the successful implementation of internal and external biomarker activities
• Develop, validate and implement innovative cellular and soluble biomarker assays with focus on flow cytometry assays for clinical studies
• Generate and interpret data to enable proof of mechanism, dose selection & proof of biology across early clinical programs and present results at internal meetings
• Partner with outsourcing functions to evaluate new CROs, drive transitioning and monitoring of internally developed assays to external vendors
• Manage activities and supervise laboratory in compliance with Novartis guidelines and Good Clinical Practice
• Develop knowledge in additional biomarker modalities and/or technologies
• Network internally and externally to expand scientific and technical knowledge

Minimum Requirements

What you will bring to the role:

Minimum Requirements:

• PhD required in Biology, Immunology, Cell biology or equivalent
• Postdoctoral fellowship completed and industry experience (2+ year) heading a drug discovery or other research related laboratory
• Experience in multicolor flow cytometry and related software analysis is required
• Professional experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment, particularly in clinical biomarker development and bioanalytical assays for cellular and soluble biomarkers
• Experience working with primary cell culture and immune cell assay techniques highly desirable
• Experience with high dimensional data analysis is highly desirable
• Ability to communicate effectively with excellent internal and external communication and presentations skills
