The Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC) department at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is looking for a senior scientist with a background in biochemical assay development in the field of applied biocatalysis, to join the multidisciplinary Bioreactions Group located in Basel, Switzerland. This position is permanent.

As the Senior Scientist, you will be part of research team, with special focus on enzyme evolution to improve enzymatic reactions in drug discovery. Your will develop and implement innovative technologies to efficiently access novel enzymes and contribute to the success of NIBR drug discovery programs.

Your Responsibilities:

• Drive scientific achievements through hands-on experiments and through others
• Effectively collaborate with colleagues from other scientific disciplines, e.g. molecular biologists, analytical and computational scientists etc.
• Introduce and share your knowledge and skills in your specific domain of expertise and demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness in applying new scientific methodologies and techniques
• Provide design of experiments and interpret data analysis
• Assay development and transfer to high-throughput setting
• Coordination of workflow and tasks through the course of evolution project
• Attend multidisciplinary team meetings, contribute with out-of-the-box ideas, initiate and execute on new projects

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:

• BSc or MSc in biochemistry, molecular biology or related
• Hands-on experience with automation of biochemical assays and operating liquid handling robotics in molecular biology and biochemistry workflow (colony picking, Hamilton, etc)
• Good knowledge of bio/analytical techniques (DNA analysis, SDS-PAGE, LC/MS) and computer applications (DNA manipulating software, Microsoft Office, databases)
• Good practical experience of protein expression and E. coli cultivation, with emphasis on molecular biology (PCR, cloning techniques, mutagenesis)
• Experience in building DNA libraries, especially DNA sequencing libraries, is a plus.
• Track record in protein evolution, as well as in applying up-to-date mutagenesis methodology is advantageous
• Team player, used to work within a team and share work tasks
• Independent and well-organized working style, eye for detail, committed to high quality
