We are seeking a highly motivated scientist with expertise in tissue targeting of biological therapies to join a dynamic and experienced cell and gene therapy team at Novartis pushing new frontiers in targeted vector design and gen(om)e editing aiming to develop one-time curative therapies for sickle cell disease and HIV.

This position resides in the Biotherapeutic Engineering and Gene Therapy (BEGT) group within NBC in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The BEGT group drives a diverse portfolio of modalities including therapeutic proteins, multi-specific antibodies, CAR-T, RNA therapeutics, AAV and lentiviral vectors. Working collaboratively with Disease area groups BEGT broadens the use of biologics in therapeutic applications where conventional antibodies have limitations.
What you'll be doing:
• Work collaboratively with a focused team to develop effective and efficient in vivo viral and nonviral delivery methods to hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs).
• Target receptor identification and validation for HSCs
• Evaluate and implement novel approaches for tissue specific targeting.
• Targeting ligand identification and optimization using phage or yeast display and/or rationale design.
• Bridge protein engineering expertise, conjugation and capsid or nanoparticle engineering to develop next generation cell-specific gene delivery facility for hematopoetic stem cells
• Functional characterization of novel viral and nonviral constructs via in vitro cellular assays, imaging and FACs for selectivity and activity.
• Offer innovative, proactive approaches to scientific questions and troubleshooting efforts
• Identify unmet needs and collaborate for novel solutions

Minimum requirements

What you'll bring to the role:
• Ph.D. with 0-2 years postdoctoral experience or BS/MS with more than 5 years confirmed experience in a relevant field.
• A deep understanding and validated technical expertise in protein conjugation techniques.
• Experience in targeted delivery of proteins, peptides, small molecules, viruses or nanoparticles.
• Extensive experience in cell culture and transfection including isolation and culture of primary cells
• The ability to work independently in experimental design, execution and data analysis
• Highly collaborative spirit, good communication skills, creativity, and multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
• Prior experience working with HSCs is a plus.
