At the Biologics Center at Novartis Institute for Biomedical Research (NIBR) in Basel, we are developing innovative therapeutic approaches for our Cell & Gene Therapies portfolio and advance our viral vector platform for the next-generation of CAR-T cell therapies.
To help us to achieve our goals we are looking for a highly motivated and curious scientist to join our team at the exciting interface between research and development with close connections to our CGT manufacturing sites. You will work on the optimization of the current viral vector expression platforms by engineering improved lentiviral vectors and developing lentiviral producer cell lines. You will contribute to the definition of manufacturability parameters by the establishment of efficient small scale models for virus production and the detailed characterization of viral vectors.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
• Contributing to strategy, design and development of state-of-the-art lentiviral packaging and producer suspension HEK cell lines, including hands-on execution
• Optimization of lentiviral vectors and encoded genetic elements for optimal viral production, efficient transduction of human primary cells and expression of transgenes, including hands-on execution
• Establishment of small scale models for screening and ranking of diverse viral vector designs and producer cell lines to identify best manufacturability parameters for transfer to Cell and Gene Therapy Technical Development, including hands-on execution
• Characterization of lentiviral vectors using state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques, including hands-on execution
• Contribute to the design of cell line engineering strategies for the development of superior lentiviral vector producer cell lines including the establishment of regulatable genetic switches
• Mentoring/supervision of lab associates
• Collaborating with scientists in the research project teams to address target and therapy’s specific needs and working with scientists in the Cell and Gene Therapy Technical Development unit to address process development and manufacturing specific needs

Minimum requirements

What you’ll bring to the role:
• PhD in bioengineering, virology, gene therapy, molecular biology, genetics, or a related field with several years of relevant laboratory experience
• In-depth knowledge of literature, methodology, and biotech/pharmaceutical industry developments in the field of lentivirus/CAR-T cell-related cell & gene therapy. Experience with biologics and/or CAR-T cell research and development is desired
• Experience working in a BSL2 environment
• Experience with lentiviral vector design & lentivirus expression platforms in mammalian cell culture
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills as well as commitment to mentorship and developing the careers of others and yourself.
• You are driven by self-motivation, enthusiasm, and scientific curiosity
• Fluency in English
