Research Scientist II / Senior Scientist I (80-100%*)

Job Description

6000! That’s the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new approaches that will help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.

The Chemical Genetics group in Basel, Switzerland, is seeking a highly motivated, curious, and innovative scientist to boost our endeavor in the discovery, development, and characterization of small molecules affecting defined phenotypes. The goal is to uncover and validate novel therapeutics and drug targets. We are a highly collaborative and global group of chemists and biologists dynamically exploring the interface of chemistry and biology for projects in early drug discovery. Our group is part of the larger Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) department that encompasses a spectrum of sophisticated capabilities needed to succeed in state-of-the-art drug discovery.

Your Responsibilities:
• Independently plan and conduct experiments, e.g. multi-step chemical syntheses, analytics, and purification.
• Perform multiple reactions or experiments in a parallel fashion, e.g. working on preparation, analysis or separation of more than one compound in parallel.
• Independent purification of products including the selection of appropriate methods and conditions.
• Utilize a range of data sources, e.g. databases or institutional knowledge, to implement alternative reaction conditions and propose alternative synthesis to target molecules or to vary experimental methods/conditions.
• Collect appropriate analytical data (e.g., NMR, MS, HPLC) to independently follow reactions, troubleshoot difficult reactions and to characterize reaction products. Independent interpretation of spectra, including understanding of 2D NMR.

Minimum requirements

What you'll bring to the role:
• Master Degree in Chemistry or apprenticeship with several years of experience in academia or industry with demonstrated ability in synthetic organic chemistry.
• Curiosity, creativity, scientific agility, and interest in small molecule design, synthesis and optimization, including exploration of structure activity relationships.
• Ability to analyze, interpret, and challenge results leading to new hypotheses.
• Ability to work in an open, interdisciplinary, and collaborative environment.
• You should be detail-orientated with excellent oral and written communication skills in English.

Desirable Requirements:
• Expertise in chemical biology and synthesis of chemical probes to address impactful biological and conceptual questions.
• Hands-on experience in synthesis of a wide range of compound classes, practical techniques, method development, and purification techniques.
