Sr. Principal Scientist/Associate Director: Structure-Guided Rationale

Job Description

6000+! The number of scientists in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This is the innovation engine of Novartis and our research is focused on discovering new drugs that will change the practice of medicine.
Biologics represent an important part NIBR therapeutic portfolio and are a critical component for intervention in the treatment of a broad range of malignancies.
The NIBR Biologics Center (NBC) builds the biologics pipeline in collaboration with NIBR Disease Areas and Platforms via a breadth of technologies for discovery of antibody, protein and gene therapy based therapeutics.
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced leader specialized in protein engineering to join the Biotherapeutic Engineering and Gene Therapy (BEGT) group within NBC in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The BEGT group drives a diverse portfolio of modalities including therapeutic proteins, multi-specific antibodies, CAR-T, RNA therapeutics and AAV. Through innovative and rational protein design as well as cell and viral engineering, the BEGT group works collaboratively with Disease area groups to broaden the use of biologics into therapeutic applications where conventional antibodies have limitations.
Your key responsibilities are, but not limited to:
• Lead a small team of highly talented and experienced scientists responsible for therapeutic protein design and engineering
• Protein engineering via rational design using computational modelling and structure analysis to improve the functionality and developability of novel biologics modalities
• Expression and purification of novel biologics modalities using various expression systems and purification techniques
• Characterization of novel biologics modalities at biochemical, biophysical and cellular levels
• Functional characterization of novel biologics modalities such as cellular assays
• Offer innovative approaches to scientific questions and troubleshooting efforts
• Identify Disease Area’s unmet needs and collaborate for a novel therapeutic solution
The Novartis Group of Companies are Equal Opportunity Employers and take pride in maintaining a diverse environment. We do not discriminate in recruitment, hiring, training, promotion or any other employment practices for reasons of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, marital or veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status.

Minimum requirements

What you will bring to the role:
• Broad knowledge in protein structure to understand and investigate structure-function relationship in designing therapeutics
• Experience with protein expression in a breadth of transient and stable expression systems and with various protein purification techniques (affinity, IEX, HIC, SEC)
• Highly collaborative spirit in- and outside of department to advance programs to clinic; good communication skills, creativity, and multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
• Demonstrated track record of success as exemplified through patents and first author publications.
• Knowledge in biology of common disease areas such as oncology or immunology
Desirable requirements:
• PhD with more than 10 years of relevant experience in structure-guided rational design protein engineering
• Experience managing and mentoring direct reports; willingness to devote time to bench work
