NIBR Biologics Center (NBC) is the worldwide biologics research and development organization of Novartis. We are driven to find and develop innovative and life-changing biotherapeutic medicines for our patients. You'll join us in this mission and play a pivotal role to discover and produce innovative medicines across key therapy areas including oncology, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, immunoscience, neurology, and ophthalmology.

We are seeking a motivated and innovative analytical scientist to join the Characterization and Formulation group within NBC in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The team of hardworking scientists in the Characterization and Formulation group work on the development and implementation of physico-analytical, mass spectrometry, and formulation technologies and methodologies to advance our ability to support cell lines, process, pre-formulation, and characterization of various biologics modalities for early drug discovery, drug candidate selection and lead development.


- Identify physico-analytical characterization needs in candidate screening, lead development, pre-formulation, and characterization of therapeutic antibodies, antibody fragments, ADCs, proteins, and emerging biotherapeutic modalities including gene therapy modalities like AAVs;

- Lead the efforts in physico-analytical state-of-the-art technique development, technology initiation, and new characterization implementation;

- Carry out laboratory responsibilities including plan/coordinate/oversee studies, analyze data, and have strategic inputs as a specialist to programs in this lab-based scientific role;

- Mentor highly hardworking junior scientists to achieve high-quality and timely deliveries for projects;

- Influence, make sound decisions, and have strong communication and leadership skills to manage project teams;

- Interact and collaborate with key partners within Discovery and Development organizations.

Minimum requirements

- Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, biochemistry or related field with a minimum of 5 years of biotech/pharmaceutical industry experience, with a strong understanding of biologics discovery and development;

- In-depth knowledge of quality attributes of different forms of biotherapeutics, and consistent record of hands-on protein attributes analysis (titer, aggregation, degradation, charge variants, PTMs, etc.);

- Understanding of protein structures, attributes, and their relationships to protein functions and stabilities;

- Sound technical judgment to solve a wide range of complex scientific problems and interpret scientific findings;

- Demonstrated scientific creativity, together with the ability to propose innovative solutions; detailed, multi-tasking, and excellent oral / written communications skills.

- Experience in developing high throughput physico-analytical assays;

- Experience in cell and gene therapy analytics.
