Human genetics is a powerful approach being using in NIBR for drug discovery. This field has enabled the discovery of new genes that cause human disease. These genes are potential therapeutic targets for drugs that can dramatically improve the lives of patients. NIBR is using human genetics to identify disease genes, to validate existing drug targets, to stratify patients for treatment, and to identify risks of side effects.

NIBR is seeking a talented scientist for a 4-year postdoctoral fellowship to employ human genetics for drug discovery in the Novartis Biologics Center. The candidate will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of bench scientists and computational biologists that mine genotype-phenotype databases, identify disease-modifying gene variants in silico, confirm these functional variants in vitro, and link these variants to disease in vivo. The candidate will work within this team as part of either molecular biology or computational efforts, depending on the candidate’s skills. The fellowship will provide the opportunity to publish in academic journals and gain industry experience. A competitive candidate may have experience in one or more of the following disciplines: human genetics, molecular biology, protein biochemistry, cell biology, or computational biology.

Beyond the human genetics effort, the successful candidate will join a vibrant scientific community and collaborate with other postdoctoral fellows mentored by a range of scientists across disciplines and platforms, including chemistry, structural biology, molecular biology, functional genomics, neurophysiology and translational medicine. Minimum requirements

*PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Genomics, Computational Biology, Statistical Genetics, or related discipline (PhD students in the last year of their thesis work, are eligible to apply)
*We are looking for an experimental biologist OR a computational biologist.

Technical qualifications:

For candidates with experimental biology expertise:
*Experience in expression, purification, and functional characterization of proteins
*Experience establishing in vitro functional assays using recombinant and mammalian cell culture-based techniques

For candidates with computational expertise:
*Experience in mining public and proprietary human genetic databases for genotype-phenotype associations
*Working knowledge of programming languages such as R and Python

*Strong publication record
*Excellent analytical, communication and organizational skills
*Candidates must be able to work independently as well as within interdisciplinary teams
