4 million people die prematurely from chronic respiratory disease each year. The Respiratory Diseases department at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is seeking a creative and collaborative computational biologist to join our computational biology team in our mission to develop transformative new therapies for patients with chronic lung diseases. The successful candidate will work at the cutting edge of data science to solve important challenges in biomedical research: assessing, integrating, curating, and mining complex data to drive drug discovery and development. As a member of the NIBR data science community of 200+ scientists, the successful candidate will also benefit from a global community with extensive know-how and resources in data analysis, data engineering and machine learning.

Job Description:

• Combine an understanding of biological sciences with computational techniques in statistics and mathematics to drive exploratory analytics for target identification and validation in asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
• Conduct scientific analyses, data integration, curation and mining of heterogeneous high dimensional pre-clinical and clinical data
• Identify novel therapeutic targets, elucidate the mode of action of drug candidates, advance the understanding of the molecular networks involved in patient disease trajectories, and explore the mechanistic translatability of pre-clinical models.
• Identify the most promising new analytical methodologies for data generated from innovative technologies and apply them to impact drug discovery.

Minimum requirements

• PhD in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, biostatistics or related field.
• Demonstrated working knowledge and application of statistics and data modeling to large scale life-sciences data.
• Hands-on experience with single-cell RNAseq and/or spatial transcriptomics data and the analysis tools for interpreting it
• Familiarity with genetic association analysis and integrating genetic/phenotypic data with molecular profiling data.
• Excellent scripting skills (ideally Python, R) and competency working in a Linux/Unix environment.
• High-learning capacity and curiosity with a solution-based approach to problem-solving.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills,
• Ability to work independently as well as on a team
• Languages: Fluent English, oral and written.
