We are looking for an Associate Director of External Animal Activities will provide robust global oversight and optimize animal welfare and 3Rs engagement with third parties supporting outsourced animal activities including Novartis sponsored research.

As a member of the Animal Welfare Compliance Team, you will participate in ethical review, 3Rs, and review risks including protocol review of external animal studies.

What you’ll be doing

Your responsibilities will include, but not limited to:

• Participates as member of Global Animal Welfare leadership team in support of global AW initiatives.

• Performs Animal Welfare audits and regular stakeholder management of external animal study partners to assure compliance with animal welfare regulations, Novartis Animal Welfare Policy and Standards, and align animal care and study practices with leading veterinary, 3Rs, and laboratory animal care.

• Identifies and engages in new opportunities for 3Rs advancements in external animal space.

• Serve as Subject Matter Expert on Animal Health and Welfare of large animals including nonhuman primates, dogs, mini pigs, and rabbits.

• Provides extensive knowledge on a variety of animal models of disease and consults with investigative staff on choice of animal models, study techniques, and potential for 3Rs engagement.

• Supports a local clinical team to ensure leading veterinary and animal welfare practices.

• Member of local management team ensuring animal care and use regulatory compliance with Novartis policies, guidelines, and regulatory requirements such as USDA, DEA, and AAALAC accreditation, as well as facility/program semi-annual reviews. Provides timely identification and resolution of issues.

Minimum requirements

What you will bring to the role:

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with license to practice veterinary medicine

• ACLAM board certification or ACLAM board eligible

• 8+ years of experience with providing clinical care for nonhuman primates, canines, rabbits, mini pigs, and rodents.

• Demonstrated commitment to and expertise in advancing and championing the 3Rs, ideally exemplified through peer reviewed publication and/or presentation at national meetings.

• Ability to engage in up to 50% travel for global responsibilities.

• Experience with drug development and toxicology testing.

• Experience with the CRO environment.

• Ability to obtain DEA and USDA accreditation and New Jersey veterinary licensure.

• Extensive knowledge in diagnosis and treatment of research animal disease and conditions.
