Associate Research Scientist, Discovery Biology (BS or MS)

Job Description

817 million. That’s how many lives our products touched in 2018. And while we’re proud of that fact, in this world of digital and technological transformation, we must also ask ourselves this - how can we continue to improve and extend even more people’s lives? We believe the answers are found when curious, courageous and collaborative people like you are empowered to ask new questions, make bolder decisions and take smarter risks. You can help by joining our research efforts at Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research here in Cambridge, MA.

We are seeking a motivated scientist to join a drug discovery program in the area of human microbiome research. The successful candidate will join the highly dynamic and collaborative Chemical Biology and Therapeutics (CBT) department, where you will be part of a team that works at the interface of the epithelial barrier, immune system, and the gut microbiota to identify novel drug candidates and targets.

Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Developing and executing biological assays to evaluate the molecular and cellular pathways involved in host-microbe interaction.
• Mechanism-of-action studies using cell biology, molecular biology/genetics, and signaling approaches.
• Conducting phenotypic and genetic screens for drug/target discovery and involvement in murine in vivo experimentation.
• Working with multidisciplinary, internal and external project teams to design, execute, analyze, document experiments and communicate results in team settings.

The Novartis Group of Companies are Equal Opportunity Employers and take pride in maintaining a diverse environment. We do not discriminate in recruitment, hiring, training, promotion or any other employment practices for reasons of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, sexual orientation, marital or veteran status, disability, or any other legally protected status.

Minimum requirements

What you will bring to the role:

• The candidate must have a B.S. or (preferably) M.S. degree in biological/biomedical sciences, with at least 2 years of hands-on research experience in the areas of cell biology/cell signaling, molecular biology and/or immunology in an academic or industrial drug discovery setting.
• The position requires hands-on laboratory experience in techniques of molecular biology, cell biology, cell signaling, and cell-based assay development.
• Experience in working with in vivo murine models is highly desirable and experience in handling and conducting functional studies using primary human and/or rodent cells would be an added advantage.
• Demonstrated track record of participating in high quality research projects (e.g., authorship in peer-reviewed publications) in any areas of biomedical research in the above mentioned areas of expertise.
• The ideal candidate will be innovative, self-motivated, possess excellent communication and organizational skills and able to work independently, and also function in a dynamic multidisciplinary matrix research environment as a successful team player.
