Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is seeking a highly motivated, scientifically curious and innovative synthetic chemist to join our Chemical Technologies Team within Global Discovery Chemistry (Cambridge, MA). The successful candidate will join an energizing and collaborative research environment working alongside colleagues who are committed to improving human health through the discovery of transformative medicines.

The role involves the independent design and reliable execution of chemical processes, in support of on-going drug discovery projects. As a strong synthetic driver, the incumbent will be expected to (1) independently, effectively and safely conduct task-oriented synthesis and purification from milligram to multi-hundred gram scale (2) anticipate potential synthetic pitfalls and proactively work on alternative routes/conditions, and increasingly, (3) explore and deploy innovative synthetic methods for the construction of pharmaceutically relevant building blocks and drug substances. Excellent structural and stereochemical elucidation skills are required. Exposure to synthetic technology (e.g. flow chemistry) is preferred but not required. The successful candidate will be expected to proactively collaborate with medicinal chemistry teams in order to identify opportunities to positively impact projects.

The candidate will have a BS or MS degree in synthetic organic chemistry and >5 years of industrial experience. They will be an independent scientist with strong working knowledge and practical experience in synthetic organic methodology and chemical process research and strong problem-solving skills. Excellent observational, organizational, data management and documentation skills are required. Outstanding communication skills are necessary.
