The Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD) is dedicated to the discovery of high quality clinical candidates for the treatment of neglected diseases. NITD is an independent Institute within the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research (NIBR), and is co-localized with NIBR Infectious disease groups in Emeryville, CA. The centralization of NITD and NIBR infectious disease groups created a dynamic center for research and collaboration of infectious agents.

About the position:
The successful candidate to this position will support design, execution and interpretation of biochemical/cellular assays to enable the discovery and pharmacological characterization of novel anti-parasitic drugs such as malaria, trypanosomiasis and cryptosporidiosis.

Specifically, the candidate will:

• Independently conduct and interpret routine phenotypic / biochemical assays to support drug discovery efforts with high reliability.
• Assist in troubleshooting and implementing new assays.
• Coordinate with various line-functions to ensure smooth running of assays.
• Ensure best practices by ensuring integrity and quality of data in a timely manner.
• Carry out innovative mechanism of action studies.
• Be self-driven and able to contribute significantly on experimental design.
• Comply with Novartis standards and practices for documenting and archiving research activities.
• Support scientific input for project presentations and progress reports.
• Maintain compliance with local and global standards in Health/Safety & Environment.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline with at least 0-5+ years of experience.
• Demonstrated ability to run routine biochemical and cellular assays independently.
• A strong team-player with an instinct for developing productive collaborations with colleagues from other supporting groups.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Positive attitude and “can-do” mentality.

Additional beneficial skills:
• Specific knowledge or expertise in working with Plasmodium, kinetoplastids or Cryptosporidium parasites will be an advantage.
• Knowledge in mammalian cell culture, fluorescence microscopy, FACs analysis, high-content imaging and animal handling are a plus.
