Tech Steward, Material Science
Reporting to the Technology Transfer Lead, the Materials Science Engineer is the principal site subject matter expert on all materials used in the manufacture of intra-ocular lenses (IOLs). The Engineer will collaborate with many site departments including R&D, engineering, production, and quality ensuring that the materials and chemicals used to produce lenses are of the highest quality and used responsibly.
Specifically, this position focuses on 3 main areas – 1) New Technology/Product Transfers, 2) Improvement of Existing Systems and 3) Maintenance/Troubleshooting of Existing Systems. 1. New Technology/Product Transfers a. Receives and organizes design documentation for new intra-ocular lens products b. Designs and implements sourcing and handling plans for the materials needed to produce new products c. Develops a thorough understanding of the interaction of manufacturing materials with the equipment and process parameters d. Develops a thorough understanding of the polymerization chemistry used to make the devices 2. Improvement of Existing Systems a. Identifies areas where materials science and materials management could improve quality, throughput, and yield while reducing costs b. Innovates ways to prevent materials-related issues from impacting quality, throughput and yield 3. Maintenance/Troubleshooting of Existing Systems a. Investigates materials science issues that may arise in the manufacture of new and existing lens devices b. Develops strong collaborative cross-functional relationships allowing for the identification of potential non-conformances to prevent them from occurring or to prevent their recurrence c. Employs sound materials science-based approaches to justifying the shelf-life of key manufacturing materials Interactions with other departments/positions: As a key member of the Manufacturing Science & Technology team, the incumbent will be the foremost expert on all materials science-related questions and issues. The Engineer will need to interact with many site functions including • R&D: The Engineer must absorb all of the research documentation available with respect to the characterization of materials used in the plant and apply that knowledge to a large scale production environment • Quality: The Engineer must develop excellent knowledge of all materials used in the manufacture of lens devices including their critical quality attributes ensuring that only materials meeting well-defined specifications are used to make medical devices • Production: The Engineer will serve as a resource for all materials-related questions that may arise during the routine production of medical devices • Engineering: The Engineer must provide expertise on the interaction of manufacturing materials with production equipment and manufacturing process parameters
