Novartis is committed to minimizing the environmental impact of its products over their entire life cycle. As scientific knowledge and stakeholder expectations evolve in this field, we regularly benchmark our activities and actively support researchers, regulators and other groups in developing more efficient environmental practices.
Key actions planned in coming years include extending Product Stewardship over the entire product lifecycle, e.g., including environmental risks and impacts as part of Responsible Procurement, strengthening our Environmental Management System (EMS), continuing proactive Contaminated Sites Management (CSM) and maintaining high quality environmental Disclosure and Reporting.
Product Life Cycle assessments (LCAs)
Environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) studies serve us to assess the environmental impacts of individual products and selected materials, such as solvents for chemical production or packaging materials.
So far, we have conducted a series of LCA studies for single products, APIs and several LCA studies on a variety of packaging and distribution solutions. The results of these studies delivered useful information to improve the environmental performance of the respective goods and processes.
Supply Chain Environmental Footprint
We aim to fully understand the materials supply chain and environmental impacts along the chain, based on assessments of materials, products and vendors. This will help us to determine opportunities on how to actively influence the environmental impacts of our supply chain. We also plan to develop options for meaningful targets to reduce these impacts.
In 2015 we conducted an assessment study on the carbon footprint and risks related to water consumption of our direct materials supply chain. These studies have demonstrated that the impacts along the supply chain (scope 3) are considerably larger than those inside the organization.
Novartis is committed to continue assessing its material supply chain more comprehensively and in more detail to better understand the respective environmental impacts and identify areas for improvement. We will quantify our environmental footprint in 2016-2017 and take steps to reduce the footprint from 2017-2020.
