Lawful protest

We are aware that animal research can raise sensitivities and ethical issues and we recognize that the role of animals in research, and the treatment of these animals, is a matter of public interest.

We also recognize that people have the right to express their opinions about animal research freely and openly. This includes animal rights activist groups that pursue legitimate and legal protest activities.

However, Novartis strongly condemns the use of extreme tactics. Activism is legitimate, extremism is not.

Novartis welcomes the chance to engage in rational and reasonable discussion with groups and individuals that are interested in pursuing a constructive exchange on the topic of animal research.

Novartis would like to see the end of medical research involving animals. However, a viable alternative does not currently exist to replace the important role that animals play in the discovery and development of these essential medicines.

Until a viable alternative is found, difficult yet vital choices have to be made in order to improve and save the lives of millions of people and animals around the world. We believe that it is important to engage in open, civil dialogue on this subject and continue to make progress toward this goal.
