Self-care products

Novartis OTC (Over-the-Counter) is a world leader in the research, development, production and marketing of self-care products. More than 400 million consumers rely on our products every year.

With a robust portfolio of non-prescription cold/cough/respiratory disease treatments and pain relief medication, as well as digestive health solutions, skin care products, smoking-cessation therapies and mineral supplements, Novartis OTC helps people take care of themselves and their families to live healthy lives.

We know that consumers have never been more in control of their health than they are today. Now – more than ever – OTC medicines have the opportunity to empower consumers to proactively manage their health. Complementing the Novartis healthcare portfolio, Novartis OTC is answering this growing consumer demand for self-care products, helping to address the full range of healthcare needs worldwide.

Benefit-focused innovation

The joy of movement around the world

Novartis OTC continually invests in innovation to better serve consumers. We create differentiated, benefit-focused products that deliver on unmet consumer needs and address evolving trends in the consumer healthcare industry. We also offer expertise and services that push the boundaries and expectations of what healthcare companies typically offer consumers – essentially, value that goes beyond our brands. And listening to our consumers, we strive to continuously improve our existing brands through innovations in product formulations and packaging.

An example is Voltaren Emulgel, Novartis OTC's nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used topically to relieve symptoms like joint pain from osteoarthritis in the knees, ankles, feet, elbows, wrists and hands.1

The original cap on the Voltaren tube was difficult for sufferers of hand and wrist pain to open. With these consumers in mind, Novartis OTC designed an easy-open, rotatable screw cap for this Voltaren product.

Most recently, Novartis OTC also launched a new Voltaren formulation that gives sufferers 12 hours of relief from their back, joint or osteoarthritis pain.1 This extended-relief formulation of Voltaren Emulgel satisfies those consumers seeking longer relief from their chronic pain, providing much-needed relief and a mind that’s free to focus on something other than body aches.

Support beyond the product

In the US, Novartis OTC conducted a survey and learned that an overwhelming majority (93%) of female migraine sufferers wish they knew more about their migraine triggers, but only 11% track potential migraine triggers regularly. Responding to a clear consumer need, the team behind Excedrin® Migraine created My Migraine Triggers, an app developed with a neurologist and available for free on iTunes in the US. My Migraine Triggers allows migraine sufferers to track the causes of their migraines daily so they can better manage them – from activities, to food, to beverages. It also gathers inputted data and creates visual charts and customized lists that migraine sufferers can easily share with their doctor right from their phones. Tracking anytime and anywhere – now that’s convenience.
