Novartis Malaria Initiative's innovative "SMS for Life" program has won the Health-Care IT category of the 2011 Wall Street Journal Technology Innovation Awards. These global awards recognize game-changing innovations that break with conventional ideas or processes, go beyond marginal improvements and have a wide impact in their field. Led by Novartis, in partnership with IBM, Vodafone, the Ministry of Health in Tanzania, and under the umbrella of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, "SMS for Life" harnesses everyday technology to improve access to essential malaria medicines in rural areas. Since rolling out nationally across Tanzania in April 2011, the program has expanded to Ghana and Kenya.

The UN-sponsored South-South Award recognizes replicable, scalable projects that successfully address global health issues using information and communications technologies. Professor Klaus Leisinger, president and managing director of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, received the award for his work in digital health.
